This years’ hunt is now over or coming to an end for most people. So, what does that mean, and I’m not talking about Christmas time?
What I am referring to though, is the start of the “Hardwater” fishing season.

I have a hard time getting out now but I do spend a lot of time reminiscing. The wait for first ice was almost painful and the anticipation leading up to the first outing kept me awake at night.
Well, that time of year is upon us now and although I don’t get out there like I used to doesn’t mean I don’t think about it.
Even now I wonder, what are the best species to target to take advantage of first ice? First Ice was always a magical time in my mind because it didn’t seem to matter what you were fishing, they were biting, at least that’s what I remember.
It is well stated that walleye fishing is usually at it’s best at this time of year but from what I recall I did more Speckle Trout fishing and remember some great outings at the beginning of the season.
Whichever is your preference the next question is, what are you really excited for, is it:
a fresh feed of your favorite fish
or
the feel of landing your first fish through the ice in over a year!

Please remember, test the ice thoroughly, as nice is that first outing is, it’s not worth losing your life!
